CDOT related news in Cotopaxi, Colorado. Region 2, Section 4, Patrol 60
I built this rock wall from rocks collected cleaning the ditch along the highway in the canyon.
This is the first and only
thing I've been allowed to do on my own at CDOT since starting work here in
1994..
Behind it is a ramp that allows the semi trucks that haul in the sand a route to the sand shed.
It's a dry wall. Jerry helped me stack some of the rocks, but I did the majority of it myself. As I wasn't being given time to finish it, I came in on a weekend or two and finished it on my own time.
According to Jerry, Ed wanted me to just dump the rocks out against the bank with the loader and be done...a sort of rip-rap wall. Fortunately, he did not communicate that wish to me, and instead I took my time and tried to build a quality wall. It is not the best, as I'm not a stone mason.
It will last until someone drives into it. It is actually quite thick in places, and I'll try to get some images taken during construction as time allows.
On my own initiative, I've started another wall out of bigger stones by our sander rack.
I haven't been given any time by Ed to work on it; otherwise, of course, this wall would have been finished in 2006. Keith Flowerdew, CDOT Superintendent, and Chuck Bennett, Senior Foreman, have given me permission to build this new wall. It won't be as tight as the one by the sand shed, but I think the local folks will enjoy viewing it rather than a pile of rocks.
Dec. 27, 2008 Update: Still no time given to me to work on this retaining wall. But at least we don't spend HOURS everyday sitting at the cafe in Texas Creek anymore. This clever motivational trick (psychology) has made the Patrol more productive. From time to time I do get a few stones placed when Ed is off on vacation, however, most of those times are spent doing "need to do" work.
Aug 2009 still not done. lol, we are too busy. What a great motivational tool this project has been!
